Welcome Back!

The Nursery School staff wishes each of you a Happy New Year!

Brrr…..It’s Cold Outside

In the event of the parking lot being slippery near the front doors, I will be opening the doors closest to the parking lot exit. This area seems to remain ice free.

Inclement Weather School Closings Delays

As a reminder, Westminster Nursery School follows the Berkeley Heights Public Schools when dealing with inclement weather closings and delays. Should the Berkeley Heights Public Schools close, Nursery School will be closed. Should the Berkeley Heights Public Schools have a delayed opening, Nursery School will have a delayed opening. For Nursery School, a delayed opening means morning sessions will run from 10:00 AM – 12:00 noon, Extended Day from 12:00 noon-1:00 PM and afternoon K-E sessions will run from 12:45 PM – 2:45 PM with children eating lunch before their arrival.

The Next Step for 2019/2020 School Year Registration

You will be notified of your child’s class placement in February. At that time a $250 deposit will be required to hold your spot.

Extended Day/Stay and Play

Invoices for November and December were emailed.

Planetarium Field Trip for 4s

During the month of January, our younger classes will be talking about the day/night sky and our 4s classes will be talking about the Solar System. The 4s will enhance this unit with a field trip to the Raritan Valley Community College Planetarium. All 4s classes are scheduled to go to the planetarium on Wednesday, January 9th. The program the children will see has proven to be very educational (and entertaining) for the children. Permission sheets will be posted on the classroom door. There will be a limit on the number of parents who are able to accompany the classes, as we have a limit on the number of people we can send to the planetarium.

Conferences

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held in January. School is not in session during your classes conferences. The playroom will be open (with supervision by a Nursery School staff member). Conference time sign-ups will be posted on the classroom doors. Conference days are as follows:

Wednesday, January 16th - AM Conferences (Bocian 2 and 3-day, Ripps and Losada)

Thursday, January 17th - AM Conferences (Machin 2 day 2s)

Calendar Dates

Wednesday, January 9th - 4s Trip to Planetarium

Monday, January 21st - School Closed (Martin Luther King Day)

Wednesday, January 23rd - Junior Scientists for 4s begins

Monday, January 28th and Tuesday, January 29th - Pajama and Breakfast Days

Flu Vaccination

Just a reminder that the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) requires children entering pre-school to have an annual influenza vaccine. We have until December 31st to collect documentation that children enrolled at Westminster have received the vaccine. This documentation will be verified by local representatives of the Department of Health and Senior Services.

Please arrange for your child to have the flu vaccine and have your Pediatrician/Primary Care Provider complete the form from your summer packet or provide a scrip. Completed forms must be returned to the office by December 20th. Failure to return the form will result in your child not being able to return to school after winter break (until the completed form is returned).

Winter Weather and Clothing

As winter approaches, scarves, hats and mittens emerge. The teachers would appreciate it if the children wore mittens instead of gloves (saves lots of time if we are getting ready to go outside). Although none is in the forecast yet, snow can’t be far behind. If your child wears boots to school, please bring shoes and help your child to change when they arrive and are picked up. Boots are a problem on the stairs, in Movement and in the playroom, so we ask that your child not wear boots all day.

With the winter weather upon us, please take extra care when walking and driving in the parking lot. While it goes without saying that all drivers should be driving slowly, this is especially true in slippery conditions. In addition, please be mindful of other vehicles parked in the parking lot when opening car doors and pulling out of parking spaces.

Special December Holidays

If you would like to share any special holiday or cultural traditions (cooking, craft, story, game, etc.) with your child’s class, please speak with the classroom teacher.

Thank you for Sharing and Caring

Christmas and Chanukah are forever, not for just one day.

For loving, sharing, giving, are not to be put away,

Like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf.

The good you do for others is good you do yourself.

Thanks to all who participated in our November sharing and caring activities. The WNS staff hopes that your participation in these activities brought a feeling of satisfaction to each of you in knowing that you made a difference in the life of a less fortunate child.

Snow Day and Delayed Opening Reminder

Westminster Nursery School follows the Berkeley Heights Public Schools when it comes to closings and delayed openings due to inclement weather. Holiday Wishes

As adults, we can easily lose our holiday cheer as it gets buried under a pile of things to do before the big deadline. But for children, this is a magical time and the memories that are made now can last a lifetime.

At school, we have been getting ready for the holidays by decorating the rooms and hallways with the children’s creations.

Christmas and Hanukkah are both times for giving to others. Each child at Westminster traditionally makes a gift to give to their family and we talk in our classrooms about what it means when we say, “It is better to give than to receive.” This is such a perfect time to teach young children about sharing with others who may not have as much. The holidays are about family, love, sharing and joy. No child is too young to begin to sense the real meaning of why we celebrate together.

Holidays are a time of joy and wonder. Many children are excited about their Christmas trees, Hanukkah and Diwali presents. And for us to simply ignore that excitement is unfair. Preschoolers should be allowed to share their excitement with each other. This is one way that children will learn about each other. We have to learn about and embrace our differences if we are to learn acceptance.

The staff of Westminster Nursery School wishes our families the best holiday season ever!

Friendship Fruit Salad

The kids in our classroom are like a fruit salad, with different colors and different tastes. We each have our families and houses and meals and customs and colors and shapes. On Monday, November 19th and Tuesday, November 20th (just before Thanksgiving) each class will prepare a friendship fruit salad for snack. Each child will bring in one type of fruit, which will be put into a big bowl to be shared with the other children in the class. Look for sign -up sheets on the classroom doors. Only a small amount (i.e. one banana or pear or apple; a small bunch of grapes, etc…) of fruit is needed from each child. All fruit should be washed, cut up and ready to serve.

Scholastic Book Order Reminders/Fundraising

We have tried many fundraisers at WNS. Most are an unnecessary and an expensive burden on the parents. If we may propose buying a book from Scholastic each month (some are just $1), that would be so helpful. Westminster earns “points” from book sales that we can redeem for items to be used in the school. In the past we have received books, language aids (i.e. flannel board stories), classroom items (multicultural figures), kindergarten games and laminating supplies. Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. ... Even after children learn to read by themselves, it's still important for you to read aloud together. When placing a Scholastic Book Order, please be sure all order forms are completely filled out. Include your child’s name and the teacher’s name. You may write one check for the total of all order forms. As the holiday season approaches, you may be ordering books that will be used as gifts. If this is the case, please note on the order form that it is a gift and the books will be bagged so your child doesn’t see them.

Extended Day/Stay and Play

Invoices for September and October will be distributed in the next two weeks. Please check for them in your email.

Flu Shot Documentation

New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) requires children entering pre-school to have an annual influenza vaccine.

Outdoor Play

We continue to go outside as much as possible for play. Please be sure your child has a LABELLED warm jacket, mittens (if necessary) and a hat. Teachers will always take the time to help your child get ready for outdoor play.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Thanksgiving Wishes

The staff at Westminster wishes each of our Nursery School families a happy Thanksgiving. This is the time of year to reflect on and be thankful for the many wonderful things we have in our lives.
